Solitude is a special plac. My wife and I have skied just about all the
Sierras, Whistler, and a few areas in the Northeast. By far, Solitude was our
best experience. The staff was friendly and made us feel at home. The Ski
school staff made an impression on my 8 year old daughter, no easy feat and the
lift operators, snow patrol, and instructors were professional and seemed happy
to be there. Watch out for the head equipment rental guy. He can be a bit
cranky.
The lift lines were short and used the RFID system to automaticly let you onto
the lift. Its a neat system and it keeps the lines moving.
The mountain overall was in great shape considering the blizzard conditions. The
groomers were on the ball.
If I had a complaint it would the price of food. The quality was excellent, but
pricey.
We'll definately make a couple more trips to Solitude this year.

Skiing Solitude - Although I’m not normally a fan of full-resort-style ski parks, Solitude has won me over. Solitude is located far from the crowds of the normal Utah ski season, and the resort itself was modeled after a small Bavarian town to enhance the sensation of literally being miles away and on top of the world. The resort is ideal if you’re looking for a small vacation: a three-day weekend of skiing, boarding, ice skating, and escape. The resort’s unique feature is the ability to, as opposed to just renting a hotel room, rent a whole cottage to yourself for the weekend, the week, or the whole season if you’d prefer. This further enhances the feeling of privacy and relaxation one gets when visiting the resort.
My favorite feature of Solitude would have to be the Nordic skiing options, which few resorts in the area offer. It’s a great way to wind down after a day of downhill.

Skiing at Solitude - A great secret of the Big Cottonwood Canyon is Solitude Ski Area, which of course is overshadowed by Alta and Snowbird in the Little Cottonwood Canyon. What most people don't expect is that it has snow and terrain that competes with these giants. Home of the finest tree skiing in either of the two canyons, Solitude can be a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the Park City resorts and others. I find that the mountain lives up to its name. Going from the top of the honeycomb cliffs or sampling any of the terrain in that area and following the nice relaxing trail that meanders back to the base area will make you think you ventured deep into the wilderness. I personally enjoy hiking from Alta and then skiing down into Solitude, and then buying a one run lift ticket to take me back up to a point where I can ski right back down to Alta. Skiing at Solitude - Solitude is one of the best family resorts in all of Utah. Not only is the price cheaper, the skiing is superb too. If you are an advanced skier/snowboarder, the steeps are great. If you are an intermediate skier, there are plenty of great groomers to ski on. For the family, Solitude is great. Mic
Low hype. This resort says no to lift lines and yes to powder. Powder Magazine recently noticed this phenomenon and published a full article about the situation in its November 2005 issue. www.powdermag.com What you are dealing with at solitude is five slow chairlifts and two high speed quads. You are also talking about some great terrain. Most noteworthy is Honeycomb Canyon. This is a great place to find tree skiing and powder. The Summit chair gives you access to Honeycomb and to some great backcountry skiing if you like. Be prepared for out of bounds skiing with the right avalanche gear and avalanche knowledge.
Recent upgrades include new condos and a lift. The new condos are based upon the European Style that you might find in the Alps and blend in nicely with Big Cottonwood Canyon. The new Honeycomb chair allows you to do laps in Honeycomb Canyon much quicker than before. Also, Solitude also has a unique ticketing system that allows you to pay for skiing per run. Bottom line: if you are turned off by big crowds and big hype, then Solitude might be a good place to check out. Mark |
