Skiing at Elk Meadows - This place has been going through some financial troubles lately and it is not clear at this time whether they will be able to open this season or not. Even if it doesn't, I'm still planning on stopping off there to cut some turns when I drive from Salt Lake City to the SIA show in Las Vegas in late January '06. It's a skier's paradise deep in the silent heart of the beehive state. Located very close to one of the highest peaks in all of Utah, Elk Meadows has some amazing terrain to brag about, both in bounds and out. Lots and lots of low angle powder fields that were virtually deserted every time I went down there and a very healthy forest that is spaced just about right for my favorite pastime- tree skiing! I really hope they get the place opened up soon and I'm sure excited to drink in that sunset later this year... the way the mountains shoot out of the desert in that region guarantees a wonderful vacation regardless of snow conditions or even operational status of chairlifts.
