Skiing Araphoe Basin - expert - Whether you just came out of your first lesson or off the podium at an extreme skiing contest, you'll be hard pressed to find a ski experience with the level of quality you'll find at A-basin. Every time I have been there, I found the snow conditions to be far better than any other ski area in Colorado, and often times I have gone there simply because it was the only ski area open within hundreds of miles and a number of states. The view of Loveland Pass' north face includes a dozen mouthwatering and spine-tingling couloirs and, while you may not be planning on defying death, they make for a spectacular learning environment to develop your skiing skills in. Palavicinni face is some of the best in-bounds terrain in the nation and the North Pole (hike-to terrain) will put your stomach right in your throat until you have a beer, hours later. Arapahoe basin also sports the beach, which is where ninety five percent of all Colorado's annual bratwursts are prepared, all during the spring and summer months. Whenever I'm headed down that way, I'm certain to bring the six pack, Hawaiian shirt, and change of clothes (there's a lake you'll find yourself attempting to ski across). See you there!

Skiing at Arapahoe Basin - A-Basin has a bad rap among Colorado ski snobs who can’t believe that such a great mountain exists within a drivable distance from home. Or maybe that hype is just because most Colorado skiers want to keep the mountain for themselves. Sure, A-Basin is small and no, it doesn’t have the celeb ski bunny atmosphere of Vail. But then again, are you coming to ski or are you coming to drink espresso in the lodge? If you’re looking for a challenge, check out the terrain at Pallivicini. Bring your dog, as the mountain allows pooches to enjoy the snow as well. An added bonus? You can park your car next to the lifts for free. Jaime Case (December 06)
