Skiing at Alyeska - Good grief! Alyeska will blow your mind-seriously, what do you want? Epic scenery? Check. Cold, fine snow? Check. Friendly locals? Check? Kick butt nightlife for visitors? You got it.
Every winter me and my college friends fly from around the country into Anchorage to savor a week of the best skiing we get all winter. We’re yuppies during the year, but we come here to ski our asses off, and Alyeska delivers. The mountain is huge, and there’s a large, closed cliff area in the middle, but each side delivers the sick steeps-News Years Chute to one side, and to the other high traverse takes you into the Headwall and Shadows, 2 excellent steep to very steep sections that feed you into a huge bowl and right into the base area. Hands down, one of the best runs I’ve ever taken.
If you’ve ever pictured yourself riding the terrain in a ski video, Alyeska is one of your single best chances to live the dream without a helicopter. The hotel is great, and I can’t wait till I get back next year.

Snowboarding at Alyeska - Hello to all the skiers out there, I wanted to review this ski area because I had a great time. There are definitely good and bad sides like everywhere else. I am originally from California, so the snowboarding here just isn’t as cool as it is out there. It is the biggest resort in Alaska, so obviously the trails are the best there, but that means that there are more people sometimes, also it can get a little pricey. Anyway I went with my brother and a friend and we had a great time and met a lot of cool people. I loved the restaurants and bars at the top of the hill. Also I want to give a shout out to Steve! He was the bartender and he was a great snowboarder.
Now for the downfalls it is not really challenging, because usually it takes me a little time to get to the bottom of a diamond, here everything kinda felt intermediate. I think I should not compare it here to California. That’s all I have to say.

Skiing Alyeska - My kids grew up riding Alyeska, and they loved every second of it. It’s a beautiful mountain, and the skiing is great, but the thing that I like the most is how family oriented it is. You’ve got to keep a eye on your brood here, it’s a expert mountain, but once the kids get comfortable theres plenty of room to let them roam. One thing for moms to know is the weather varies greatly. It will be snowing hard on top and raining at the base, so come prepared with plenty of clothes and hot chocolate! I didn’t ski much when I was younger, but now that I’m learning I love Alyeska as much as everyone else in the family already did. Beth Pannier, Eaglecrest, AK - 06'
Aleyeska is a phenomenal area. It’s a marine mountain, and the weather is constantly changing-the snow variety shows it. The best day I’ve ever ridden there combined 15 degree snow in high winds, super sticky thick glue type powder, and a heavy mist at the bottom-all punctuated by sun breaks. Sound hairy? In spades. But what I got was great turns, snatches of a ocean view with the sun glinting off the clouds, and a total AK experience.
Make no mistake, it’s an intermediate through experts mountain for the most part (my beginner friends had a horrible day in the rain at the bottom), but if you have the desire to really ski on the edge of the wilderness, Alyeska is the place to go.
Bonus points-I saw a Subaru Brat at the bottom with one of those upwards curving handrails that people ride in terrain parks-someone told me they roll it out in the spring. Too funny. Definitely a A+ area. I’m already dreaming of getting back.
