Skiing Whistler/Blackcomb - If you are skiing in the United States, particularly in the New England areas, you know that skiing can be a very expensive sport. If you have enough frequent flyer miles to get you to Vancouver, British Columbia, a trip to Whistler/Blackcomb may be less expensive than a weekend in Killington. However, since Whistler will be the site of the 2010 Olympic Games, its best to plan a trip now before the prices go up.
The Whistler/Blackcomb area consists of two mountains: Whistler and Blackcomb. The mountains are gigantic, and they usually receive a huge amount of snow. One caveat: You are in the Pacific Northwest. As much as you may like to get the bragging rights of skiing from top to bottom, at the end of the day, the snow on the lower mountain is wet and slushy. Making things worse, everyone goes back to the village via the same trails. Check your ego at home and take the gondola down. There is plenty of time for heroics on the upper slopes. By the way, don’t be upset if it’s raining in the village. Rain in the village means its snowing in the mountains!
As far as the terrain goes, Whistler/Blackcomb has something for everyone! There are plenty of bowls and steeps for experts. Intermediates will love the wide blue cruisers on Blackcomb. At night, the après ski scene is probably the best in North America. Lisa Mercer 06'
Advanced Snowboarder - During my last 5 seasons at Whistler/Blackcomb, Whistler has always been my
favorite mountain to hit for that true Free riding experience. With the newly
added inbound/backcountry terrain in Flute Bowl and 4 new runs to Peak to Creek,
offers advanced and expert skiers and riders limitless opportunities for
natural, untouched terrain. Richard
Snowboarding Whistler - Skiing or Snowboarding at Whistler/Blackcomb is a must for anyone living in North America, it is the biggest and the baddest place to go, bad as a in very good. Spend at least a week when you go. Jad
Snowboarding Whislter/Blackcomb - Without a doubt, the best ski resort in BC and perhaps Canada. Snow is always fantastic, runs are always in great shape, and they arre constantly upgrading to make things better! While Whistler has outpriced itself in the past 10 years, its still worth the extra money to ride the hills for a few days. Best of all, when the day is over, there's tons of other activities to keep you busy. At the bottom of Whisler & Blackcomb mountain are a myriad of restaurants, tons of great shops, and always a fantastic atmosphere in the Village as well. With the Olympics only a few years away, watch for all the great stuff in Whistler to get even better! Warning: Whistler can get packed, so take patience along with you! Darren
Skiing Whislter BC - Fantastic skiiing and the best part was the we went
mid-week, so the crowds were pretty tame. Well, more
tame than if we had went on the weekend. The road up
is a little sketchy since they're doing lots of
construction on it, but Whistler (and its glorious
powder) is well worth the drive! When they say
Whistler is a world class resort, they mean it. They
seem to get the best powder around and have the best
groomed runs. Take a beginner or go with some
backcountry fanatics, its all there. Dave
Snowboarding Whislter Mountain - The day I went up, it was sunny weather and great
powder since January had record snowfalls. Seeing that
I was trying to avoid the crowds, we quickly drop
into the alpine to the heli-ski tenure north of the
Spearhead Glacier. This area is a playground with
chutes, open bowls and then some sparse trees as we
approach treeline. Also quite a few cliffs and
objective hazards like convexities and cornices above
tempting bowls. Gnarly stuff but great for those who
want to avoid the crowds! Josh |
